Sakura Index Interviews will feature an electric artist for this edition and her name is Eir Aoi!

Eir Aoi is one of the most electrifying singers today. Recently, she was the singer of the OP for the anime “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” Season 4.

Thanks to our friends over at qdopp, Inc, we had a chance to send in a few questions to Ms. Aoi. You may read the text below for our brief interview with Eir Aoi!

SAKURA INDEX INTERVIEWS – EIR AOI

Q: We heard that “MONSTER” and “unrealistic” (絵空事) are dropped together on April 22, your Lantis debut carrying two of anime’s biggest ongoing franchises at the same time. What does it feel like to return with both ‘Classroom of the Elite’ and ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime’ side by side?

[Q:「MONSTER」と「絵空事」が4月22日に同時リリースされ、ランティスからの新たなスタートとして、『ようこそ実力至上主義の教室へ』と『転生したらスライムだった件』という人気作の主題歌を同時に担当されています。そんな2作品とともに新たな一歩を踏み出すことを、どのように感じていますか？]

Eir Aoi: First of all, I’m grateful for the opportunity to perform the theme songs for these series. It’s a real honor to be able to express each work’s world through the songs, whether that’s through the lyrics, the recording process, or the music videos. Having been given this opportunity, I hope to bring that same passion to my live performances going forward.

[作品のテーマソングを歌わせていただける事にまずは感謝しております。作品に寄り添った歌詞やレコーディング内容・MVに仕上げたり作品の世界観を表現する歌を歌えることは私にとって光栄なことなのでせっかくいただいた機会をこれからはライブで、熱く表現していきたいと思ってます。 ]

Q: You described recording “MONSTER” as unsealing a rock-singing voice you had kept locked away. What did it feel like — physically and emotionally — the first time that voice came back in the recording booth?

Q: 「MONSTER」のレコーディングでは、ご自身の中に閉じ込めていたロックボーカルの歌声が「封印解除」されたと表現されています。レコーディングブースで初めてその声が戻ってきたとき、体の感覚や気持ちの面では、どのような変化がありましたか？

Eir Aoi: For “MONSTER,” I experimented with the vocals, opting for a piercingly sharp delivery. It’s less about being rock and more about creating an edge, with slight shifts in tone color throughout. Because the instrumental track is so fierce, I knew I had to fight to hold my own, so I sang as if I were locked in combat with it.

I think you could say that “MONSTER” is a new type of Eir Aoi song.

[『MONSTER』はかなり鋭く歌っています。ロックにというよりは鋭く歌っていまして、少し声色を変えたりもしています。演奏が激しいのでそれに負けないようにしなければと思って、戦うように歌いました

Q: You once said, “Eir Aoi exists because SAO existed.” From “INNOCENCE” in 2012 to “心臓” in 2022, how has your relationship with that franchise changed, and what does it mean to you now looking back?

Q: かつて「SAOがあったから藍井エイルがいる」とおっしゃっていましたが、2012年の「INNOCENCE」から2022年の「心臓」まで、SAOという作品との関わりはどのように変化してきましたか？そして今あらためて振り返ってみて、ご自身にとってどのような存在になっているのでしょうか？

Eir Aoi: Specifically, the major changes between “INNOCENCE” and “Shinzou” were having a polyp removed and overcoming a voice disorder. Those experiences changed the way I approach singing, and in order to continue performing for the SAO series over the long term, I also adapted my singing technique.

SAO is where my journey began, and it has had a profound influence on both my outlook and the way I sing. It is an incredibly important series that remains inseparable from my career.

[具体的にはポリープを取った事、発声障害を乗り越えたこと、この2つがINOCENCEから心臓までの間に変化したことではありました。そういった経験があった中で歌との向き合い方も変わり、SAOの作品を長く歌うためにも歌い方は変えていきました。

SAOは私の始まりでもあり、気持ちや歌唱法に変化をもたらせてくれた、私（藍井エイル）とは切り離せない、とても大切な作品です。]

Q: You’ve described your new live concept as sports, not spectatorship — “come and leave soaked in sweat.” What should a fan walking into Zepp Haneda on August 16 expect to feel by the end of the night?

[新しいライブコンセプトを、観覧ではなく「スポーツ」と表現し、「汗びっしょりになって帰ってほしい」ともお話しされています。8月16日にZepp Hanedaを訪れるファンには、ライブの終わりにどのような気持ちになっていてほしいですか？]

Eir Aoi: I’m holding a live event called “Aoi Sports Festival.”

Since the theme is sports, I want everyone who attends to immerse themselves in a new experience that blends live music and athletics, almost like a theme park attraction. My goal is for everyone to leave feeling so pleasantly exhausted they can barely make it home! (laughs)

[今回は「藍いスポーツ大会」というライブを開催します。

テーマがスポーツなので、参加される皆さんにはライブとスポーツが融合した新しい、まるでアトラクションのような今回のライブに浸って頂き、帰宅できないぐらい

心地よい疲労感を感じて帰ってもらいます！笑]

Q: After your 2025 Asia tour, you shared that audiences sang back your songs in perfect Japanese without any translation. What do you hope a fan in Manila or Jakarta — who may never make it to one of your venues — takes away from your music when they listen?

[2025年のアジアツアーの後、現地の観客が完璧な日本語であなたの曲を歌い返してくれたとお話しされていました。マニラやジャカルタなど、ライブ会場には来られないかもしれないファンにも、あなたの音楽を通してどのようなものを受け取ってほしいと願っていますか？]

Eir Aoi: I look forward to the day when I can meet those who haven’t yet had the chance to attend one of my live shows. Until then, I hope you’ll continue to enjoy the anime and my music, and have fun imagining what one of my concerts might be like.

Q: If you could hand one song to a first-time listener in 2026 and say “this is Eir Aoi right now,” which song would it be — and what would you like to say to Sakura Index’s readers across Southeast Asia?

2026年に初めてあなたの音楽を聴く人に「これが今の藍井エイルです」と伝えるとしたら、どの曲を選びますか？また、サクラ・インデックスの東南アジアの読者に向けて、メッセージをお願いします。

Eir Aoi: If we’re talking about my recent songs, I’d choose “MONSTER,” as I think it showcases a new side of me. Fans in Japan have been singing along with me during “MONSTER,” and I’d be thrilled if audiences across Asia would sing it together with me as well. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you!
